Ireland: Helen Dillon & A Classic Tablescape

Helen Dillon's Irish garden, below. All the potted plants from South Africa, all terra cotta pots, all full sun, landscape design rule of big leaves with small leaves.
.
Timeless. Did I take the pic last summer or 1998? (Big concept, taking advantage of it? The best gardens across the globe do.)
.
Garden & Be Well, XO Tara
.
Travel assignment, visit Helen Dillon's garden in Ireland be sure to have tea/scones too.
.
You thought this was just a table-in-the-garden-with-a-few-pots? Hardly.

Outdoor Kitchen

Belgard does outdoor kitchens, below. All price points.
Myriad styles.
Landscaped PROPERLY each is unique.
Alas, Belgard's marketing pics, above/below, create an entirely new meaning for Bad To The Bone.
Please, overlook the landscapes (I am, even as they harm my profession) and consider Belgard's fabulous outdoor kitchen options in both configuration & materials.
.
Garden & Be Well, XO Tara
.
Landscape design with fabulosity & Bad To The Bone means what it's supposed to! Pics via Belgard catalogue, which you can order online at their site.
.
If you are handy Belgard outdoor kitchens are a DIY project.
.
Puppet Barbuda has a theory about bad Landscape Design (poor darling Puppet Barbuda, offended at the least infraction to her profession) in landscape marketing materials. Testosterone-on-wheels-mow-blow-go does most of the purchasing & construction. Companies cater to who is at THEIR cash register.
.
Puppet Barbuda wants companies to cater to who generates many of their sales. Why overlook the Landscape Designer? Why overlook women, typically age 50+, putting in fabulous landscapes? Do you think women don't do hardscape? Do you think they don't grill? It's already known women are the dominate purchasers at nurseries.
.
Puppet Barbuda thinks it's odd to sell a product bashing an industry, Landscape Design, that will raise sales figures. Puppet Barbuda wants to know, Is There Anybody Out There?
.
FYI, I spoke with the fabulous guys from Belgard while lecturing at the St. Louis, MO, Home/Garden show earlier this month. Was totally Puppet Barbuda with them. Guess what? They listened. Hmm, no worries, Puppet Barbuda will keep at it, ha, just in case they were placating her.

Create Magic At Each FRISSON

FRISSON's are potent. Do you see this one?FRISSON's, done well, create magic.
.
Transitioning mortared steps to a step set in dirt is a FRISSON. Sure, I could have designed all the steps with mortar but I wanted a more exciting FRISSON (and this path is not a high traffic area).
.
Consider each FRISSON in your landscape. Where: potager meets woodland, turf meets flowering shrub border, house meets garden, terrace meets Tara Turf, path meets pond & etc........
.
Garden & Be Well, XO Tara
.
Pic taken during construction in a client's backyard last month. Client is DIY with some of the plantings, dwarf mondo will be planted between the stones set in dirt.
Andre Breton, photographer-poet-writer-surrealist theorist-expert on Soviet Modernist architecture was the one drawing my mind, via his photography, to the importance of FRISSON. Gertrude Jekyll was big on the FRISSON.

Curtained Debut

Yesterday, below, my conservatory under construction. Rescued materials (aka free) a century old: doors, most windows, cedar planks, tongue-groove.French doors, above, are the front of my conservatory & face the back of my home.
My carpenter (now my hero, for this feature alone) set the back windows, above, to open. Notice the outlet above? Chandelier + gravel floor + 3 outlets + 4 walls of windows; what more could a girl (no worries, girl knows when to sling queenly commands) want in less than 200 sq ft?
My patio, above, in normal life.
My patio, above, today. I can't abide it.
Curtains, above, from my bedroom onto the patio have been closed for weeks. My constitution does not include the strength to see this.
.
Garden & Be Well, XO Tara
.
Today, maybe, guys will be done !!!! Cannot wait for the curtained debut of my conservatory. No, my guys aren't slow they keep working on my client's jobs. Yes, a GOOD problem.

Building Your Garden Room: 10 Steps

Think, cha-ching, this isn't for you? Poppets, PUPPET BARBUDA will not let you off easy. That measly excuse of no money? HOW TO build your new GARDEN ROOM:
1. Make decision to build a GARDEN ROOM. (Odd, this is the most important step)
2. Get envelope, label it, GARDEN ROOM. (Leftover paper money 2-3/week goes here.)
3. Tell all your friends, "I'm building a GARDEN ROOM."
4. Look at everything in your path with RESCUE eyes.
5. Bring it home. Old fencing, stone, brick, concrete, wood, house parts.
6. Get paint from the rejects at hardware store.
7. Accessorize from thrift store & sale items: TJMAXX, Marshall's, Ross.
8. Pots/urns from garage sales, big box store sales.
9. Put the right man in your project. (Alas, difficult.)
10. Hire man, & the same day, invite girlfriends to your Garden Tea Party.
.
Take step #1 and your GARDEN ROOM will appear.
.

Fake Geometry

Revelation came slowly, below. The balance is real, below.
Symmetry, below, only an illusion. Do you see?
Slow down, look closely, below.
Fake Geometry; looking real. The columns are not symmetrical.
.
Poppets, when the revelation about the columns arrived I knew I was in the presence of genius. Have known about Fake Geometry in Landscape Design but this was my first encounter when it was the columns.

More pics from my client's home in Macon, GA last weekend. Notice the enfilade from parking court/patio/room/frontyard in the 3rd pic? Taking pics in my gown/robe by early morning lite the scrumptious dogs did not rouse from their beds. Their daddy was making coffee, I was only a guest & you know who they were awaiting, mommy. When she arrived those dogs exploded in joy !!!!

Turning Windows Into Doors

Doors, below, were originally windows.Standing at the French doors, above, I shot across the covered patio, below.

The coffee table, below, still filled with the debris of our gardening conversations which meandered to the dinner table & thru a dinner of fresh crabcakes & ....
Window, below, had been the back door.
New back door (seen in the top pic) flows onto patio to the left of the downstairs window, above.
.
Garden & Be Well, XO Tara
.
Yes, that's our fabulous breakfast, top pic, after the fabulous dinner. Pics from the same garden as yesterday's post. Please know, Poppets, none of these pics are STYLED. I don't believe in styled pics. I believe in life beautifully lived and design accordingly. SIMPLY. CLASSICALLY.
.
If you've got to WORK AT IT to get these types of pics. You're doing something wrong.

Double Axis: House & Landscape

On the patio, below, looking into the backyard.
On the patio, without moving my feet, below, looking into the house. A room overlooking: frontyard, sideyard, backyard. 3 walls of windows & a fireplace wall with 2 doors. I doubt there is a smaller, more delicious room.
Incredibly exciting Double Axis. Do you have a Double Axis point like this? Get one. Then, get more!
.
Tara Questions to answer about Double Axis at your home & garden. 2 pictures taken from 1 spot. Does this picture make me want to see the garden? Does this picture make me want to see inside the home?

Tables: Square or Rectangle

Still life, pot collection, flagstone terrace in dirt, groundcovers, vines, conifers, meadow, high & low density for maximum pollinator habitat, contrasting textures & colors(foliage), color of window trim, timelessness, Vanishing Threshold, rectangular table, & which continent is this..... (Did you really know so much was in this gorgeous pic?)Puppet Barbuda cannot abide round tables for terrace/patio/deck.
.
Puppet Barbuda loves square or rectangular tables; they are so flexible. Pushed next to your home, a rail, edge of terrace, behind a bench.
.
Puppet Barbuda loves the flexibility of 2 square tables; used separately or pushed together.
.
Imagine the pic, above, with a round table. Ick.
.
Garden & Be Well, XO Tara
.
Tara Question: Pic of your patio/deck should answer, "Is this so wonderful I must see the garden & is this so wonderful I must go inside & see the interiors?"
.
Pic from Dana Gallagher. Puppet Barbuda knows there are exceptions to her round-table-disdain.

Pot Display

When the setting is right a pot display is de rigueur.

Choice morsels to delight the eye and

invite perusal.

Have seen Pot Displays from Italy to Ireland & points between. Here, a delight in the same Italianate garden in Athens, GA as previous posts. This garden is about 1 acre.

Enfilade

More windows than shown, below, view the patio. From the windows, thru the patio, across the lawn, and into
the woods. A complete view, an enfilade.
.
Imagine, sitting on your couch, enjoying views of the patio, lawn & woodland.

Nice, indeed.

Kitchen View

Birdhouse condos, below. View from deck.
Still lifes are imperative for this landscape. Deck is viewed from the Garden Room & Kitchen. Is the deck used? As a destination for the eye, yes.

From inside the Kitchen (& Garden Room), below, EDUCATOR watched a pair of bluebirds build their nest & raise their young this spring.

This simple joy, a huge victory.
.
Sometimes the hand of G-d takes control of our life. Sinking into a garden let's me trust that hand. Watching it in the life of a friend is humbling.

Pics taken yesterday in EDUCATOR's home/garden. Client, & now a friend of several years, she is able to maintain her garden with unskilled (aka: affordable) labor. More....

Overdose Your Theme

Contemporary home? Contemporary rails.
.
Garden & Be Well, XO Tara
.
Atlanta numbers few contemporary style homes, yet can claim to be the capital of contemporary homes with colonial rails. PUPPET BARBUDA wonders, is that disgusting, embarrassing, or both?

LINE SILHOUETTE FORM

Takes your breath away, yes? Why? Hardly ubiquitous.
.
Lines of the house are repetitive horizontal & perpendicular.
.
Good landscape design KNOWS what to contrast.
.
This isn't a STUPID swing, aka uncomfortable. Deep. Sink into those cushions dahlings.
.
The cushions are already telling you about inside the house aren't they? Vanishing Threshold.

GLASS POCKET DOOR

Why would she want a glass pocket door to the garden? The answer is clearly shown, above.
.
Elizabeth Clarkson loved to roll her Steinway baby grand on the brick patio & play amongst her beloved birds.
.
She left her home as a bird sanctuary open to the public, Wing Haven, in Charlotte, NC. Unintentionally, like Graceland, it stands as a time capsule of an era.

VANISHING THRESHOLD: Lighting

When it moves outside it's a trend. Fabulous lanterns. First Rules of Landscape Design: copy, simplicity, repetition.
.
SENSUOUS, above. Crunch of gravel, trilling water, warmth of candle light, hearing refreshments poured from a pretty pitcher, feel of foliage upon your arm, repetition of color house-furniture-shutters-arbor-fountain-gravel, scale, flow, texture, vanishing threshold.
.
Beauty w/Low Maintenance in the garden is sensuous & feng shui.

Design, above, for yourself. Grace IS a destination.

UP TO THE HOUSE

Stone or gravel up to the house. First view, Scotland, almost 2 decades ago during a landscape study trip. I GOT IT !!!! Not during college, not during any symposium had anyone, ANYONE, said to put stone or gravel up to the house. I've been doing it ever since.
.
Oddly, I've only recently done it for myself. Days ago. Why did I wait so long? Cobblers child?
.
Shot pea gravel, above, $20/ton. #89 granite gravel is gray and slightly larger than shot pea gravel. Voila, color choice!!

Site deciduous understory trees, crape myrtle, above, to shade your home from summer sun. Window, above, views stone terrace, below. Summer's blanket of rudbeckia gives way to smooth Tennessee gray flagstone the rest of the year.

KNOW WHO TO ASK

Ask a landscape contractor specializing in brick/stone/concrete/mortar for ideas about a path or terrace? It's fairly certain you'll end up with ideas like this, below. Instead of something like this, below.
Gravel ranges $20-$48/ton & doesn't require skilled labor.
.
At a girlfriend's for dinner I broke a personal rule, "No Landscape Designing, Unless Asked. " She told me the story of several contractor bids to repair her old, broken concrete patio. Each bid into the thousands of dollars. I asked her, "What do you think of gravel?"
.
Yes, dahlings, less than $300 later she had a gravel terrace. She asked me, "Why didn't any of the contractors tell me about gravel?" She loves the terrace & so do I. We've had many dinners, brunches & glasses of wine on her gravel terrace.
.

Top pic from Smithsonian Horticulture Archive, Bottom pic from the movie, It's Complicated. No time to poke around for my girlfriend's gravel terrace at the moment. Another post!
